Aigner treatment of cancer in advanced stages

Rather than systemic administration of cytostatics, which takes a toll on the entire body, Professor Aigner uses isolated perfusion and intra-arterial infusion (regional chemotherapy) techniques. Guided by X-ray imaging, a catheter is advanced through the femoral artery directly into the blood vessels feeding the tumour. This makes it possible to deliver a drug dose several times higher than standard protocols while trapping it inside the affected organ.

Main Focus Areas of the Clinic:

• Severe conditions: locally advanced pancreatic cancer, isolated and multiple liver metastases (including colorectal cancer), pleural carcinomatosis.
• Techniques: surgical isolation of the organ’s vascular bed, chemoembolisation, targeted intra-arterial therapy.
• Admission criteria: advanced stages T3–T4, cases where standard multi-agent chemotherapy regimens have failed, as well as situations requiring a reduction in tumour volume to make the patient eligible for surgery.

Professor Aigner’s protocols are grounded in international guidelines, tailored with strict regard for the patient’s general health status. If a patient cannot physically tolerate standard ESMO dosages, Professor Aigner recalculates the concentration specifically for localised delivery. Regional chemotherapy minimises systemic toxicity. Patients rarely suffer a critical drop in white blood cell counts, severe nausea, or wasting (cachexia). The primary goal here is to halt disease progression, preserve the patient’s strength and appetite, and turn an acute oncological process into a manageable chronic condition.
