About the clinic

He worked in the field of aortocoronary bypass surgery. After working as a privatized assistant professor, he was selected as director of the Clinic of Surgery at the University of Regensburg. From 2002 he took up the position of Medical Director of the Clinic of the University of Munich. He was also involved in the surgical treatment of oncology, investigated metabolism and artificial nutrition. In addition, he was involved in research on transplantation.

Today, the clinic is an institution with its own separate financial organization. In addition, the clinic operates almost separately from other institutions in Germany, as it has its own administration that deals with all external matters. At the same time, the clinic works directly with the university. The staff of the clinic are involved in the education of students and residents as well as in scientific work in cooperation with various laboratories and departments within the clinic and the university.

Within the structure of the University Hospital there are two campuses: the Inenstadt Campus and the Großhadern Campus.

The Inenstadt Campus brings together various departments that are located in the city center. The campus is constantly being modernized, new facilities are being built, and modern equipment is being provided. To date, the institution includes a large number of different departments. Widely known children’s hospital named after dr. Haunerschen. There are also gynecology and psychiatry departments functioning on the campus. In addition, specialists of the newly built department of dentistry with an investment of 22 million Euros in technical equipment. The clinic has extensive world experience in performing various types of operations on the maxillofacial region. The departments of skin diseases and venereology have also been built, and the ophthalmology department of the university clinic is known throughout Germany and Europe. In addition, the campus provides training in normal and pathologic anatomy in the pathomorphology department. In addition, students are taught the basics of physiology at the campus a Inenstadt. A few years ago the departments of child and adolescent psychiatry were opened.

Großhadern Clinic The clinic receives tens of thousands of patients a year, as it has about 1000 beds. In addition, the clinic has a genetics department, where various studies are carried out, as well as the diagnosis of many congenital diseases. The Großhadern Clinic is home to the faculties of the University of Munich: chemistry and pharmacy. In addition, since 2015, the campus has housed a biology center called Martinsried, which houses the main units of the Biology Department of the University of Munich. This center also has a transplantology department, one of the best in Europe. The department performs surgical interventions for transplantation of almost any organs. With the help of various methods such organs as heart, kidneys, liver and lungs are transplanted. In addition, the clinic performs interventions on transplantation of several organs at once, the so-called complex transplantation: pancreas and kidneys, heart and lungs.

The Großhadern Clinic also has oncology and neurology departments. Diseases of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems are treated. In addition, the campus has a palliative care center, which is interdisciplinary because it requires many specialists throughout the clinic to work together. In 2014, Großhadern began operating a separate operating theater. It includes more than 30 operating rooms. This center conducts admissions for emergency care. In addition, the Groschadern Clinic has several intensive care units, outpatient surgeries are performed, and 4 operating rooms are open for this purpose. This campus is also constantly being completed. A palliative care center for children and a department for the study of different types of stroke and dementia are planned to open soon.

In addition to training students to become doctors, the Großhadern Clinic offers training sessions for medical staff. Students who are planning to work as nurses and paramedics, as well as the staff of the various departments themselves, are also present to improve their skills and theoretical knowledge.

In addition to ambulances, the clinic has its own helipad and a Christoph Munich resuscitation helicopter.

The University Hospital is famous all over the world. It hosts various clinical trials to study anti-cancer drugs. In addition, it receives patients from various countries, and various medical centers can participate in its research. Thus, the clinic cooperates with almost all centers for the study of diabetes mellitus, various neurological disorders, as well as for the development of methods in the treatment of oncology. The presence of various laboratories allows many tests to be carried out in the clinic itself, which contributes to a faster progress of research.
