Scoliosis treatment in Munich

   Scoliosis treatment in Germany a process that has many nuances, so a bit of general information before elaborating on this topic. Scoliosis – a spinal deformity in which the spinal column deviates to the right or left of its vertical axis. This disease is widespread among the population and usually manifests itself during childhood and adolescence.

The causes of this disease are many, but most often (in 75% of cases) the exact cause of the disease cannot be established, but it is worth trying. If it is possible, the treatment of scoliosis will be much more effective. If it is scoliosis of 1-2 degree, there is a high probability of formation of pathology due to an improper lifestyle:

— poor posture,

— the habit of sitting with a «crooked back»,

— frequent carrying of a bag or satchel on one shoulder,

— sedentary lifestyle,

— lack of physical activity and, as a consequence, a weak muscular corset.

Also one of the established causes of scoliosis can be called heredity, that is, predisposition to scoliosis in those people whose parents had diseases of the spine. Here we are talking more about the pathology of connective tissue, because it is such problems are often inherited. Scoliosis of the spine can also be formed in diseases of muscle tissue, various types of dystrophies or hyperkinesis (spasms). In this case, the treatment of scoliosis should begin with the treatment of the underlying disease.

Scoliosis is a serious disease of the spinal column, which in addition to the anatomical defect, causes disorders of organs and systems, sometimes quite significant. The more pronounced the deformity, the greater the negative impact on the work of internal organs (heart, lungs, liver). In addition, scoliosis can serve as a starting point for other spinal diseases, such as osteochondrosis or intervertebral hernias.

Treatment of scoliosis — approaches and tactics

The main medical law applies here: the less neglected the disease, the earlier the treatment of scoliosis is started, the more effective it will be. Of course, the method and tactics of treatment depend on the stage of the disease.

Depending on the severity of the lateral curvature of the spine, scoliosis is divided into 4 stages.

Stage 1 – curvature to a 10-degree angle;

Stage 2 – the angle of deformation is 11-25 degrees;

Stage 3 – 26-50 degrees;

Stage 4 – an angle of more than 50 degrees.

Conservative treatment of scoliosis is indicated in the first and second stages of the disease As medical practice shows, this is almost 85 percent of those who seek medical help. In more severe, third and fourth stages, scoliosis is corrected surgically.

German doctors have their own world-famous school — Conservative treatment of scoliosis (author Katharina Schroth’s methodology), the followers of which work in the country’s clinics and very successfully cope with relatively mild cases of the disease. In addition to breathing exercises, Schroth correction of scoliosis is effectively carried out using manual therapy, massage, therapeutic exercises, cryotherapy, swimming, the use of standard corrective braces or individually made braces on the principle of Abbott-Chenault, lymphatic drainage (apparatus massage), electrotherapy, etc.

The choice of adequate conservative therapy is very important! A carefully designed individual program allows you to avoid disease progression and, as a result, complex surgical intervention. Every detail is important at this stage: the sequence of exercises, the number of approaches, the complexity of the physical activity, the massage technique, the quality of the physiotherapy equipment and much more. In Germany, this process has been perfected through years of practice.

In more severe cases, in the third and fourth degrees of curvature, scoliosis is treated by surgical correction. For this purpose, if possible, a minimally invasive method is used — a modern type of surgical intervention with minimal incisions — from 1 mm to 3 cm with the help of an operating microscope. The advantages of this method are minimal risk of infectious complications and positive cosmetic effect.

Консервативное и хирургическое лечение сколиоза

In Germany, several types of surgical intervention are used. All surgeries are aimed at correcting deformities of the spinal column and fixing the vertebrae in a physiological position.

The main directions of surgical treatment of scoliosis in Germany:

— The use of metal structures that are individually selected to correct the curvature of the spine and fixation.

— In case of contraindications to metal structures, the use of autografts — pieces of the patient’s own rib or femur.

— Removal of intervertebral joints in a widespread process.

— Treatment of adolescent scoliosis of the 3rd — 4th degree in Germany is successfully carried out with the help of a movable implant, which is able to change its length as the child grows.

The following methods are used to diagnose scoliosis in Germany:

Radiography – allows you to determine the localization and severity of curvature of the spine, to determine the degree of the disease.

Computed tomography – allows the curvature to be detailed in a three-dimensional image. A CT scan is a mandatory examination before spinal surgery.

Magnetic resonance tomography – is used in the diagnosis of scoliosis to examine the spinal cord and the state of the nucleus pulposus in the vertebrae. MRI allows determining the presence of compression of spinal cord structures due to spinal deformity and excluding the presence of intervertebral hernias.

Ultrasound of internal organs – is indicated for significant curvature of the spine.

Electroneuromyography – A nerve and muscle examination. It is done when there is an impairment of movement or sensation.

Price is based on the required treatment program. As a rule, the cost of diagnostics and treatment varies within the following limits: diagnostics — from 500€ to 2500€, treatment plus rehabilitation — from 35000€ to 45000€.
