Aortic dissection

Aortic dissection accompanied by sudden, very severe and unbearable chest pain is reported in 96%. The pain is characterized by a tearing or piercing sensation, such as with a knife or axe. The pain often travels with delamination of the inner layer of the aorta — migrating to the back, lower back or abdomen. There may be loss of consciousness, neurologic impairment with paresis or paralysis, renal or hepatic failure, pain and cooling of the extremities. In a small percentage of cases, pain is not mentioned — most commonly in chronic dissection. Aortic dissection can lead to sudden cardiac death.

Aortic dissection: ascending aortic arch and aortic arch

It is used for both chronic aneurysms and acute aortic dissections. Dissection of the ascending aorta is a disease with an extremely high mortality rate; the only treatment is surgery.
