Biography

His main areas of work include interstitial pulmonary diseases, pulmonary hypertension, lung transplantation, allergic pulmonary diseases, respiratory failure, inflammation and oxidative stress.

Main stages of work:

Jürgen Behr began his professional journey in 1979 when he enrolled at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. During his studies, he received a scholarship for high academic performance from the Bavarian Educational Background.

After graduation, from 1985 to 1987, he worked on his dissertation research, which he completed by defense in 1987. The work was devoted to the study of transport systems of sodium ions in red blood cells (erythrocytes) in hypertension, also one of the parts of the work reflected the evaluation of the participation of potassium ions and lipid levels in blood in hypertension.

Dr. Jürger Behr subsequently received a certificate of training as a general practitioner. From 1993 to 1995, he deepened his knowledge in the field of pulmonology by obtaining a certificate of successful completion of a training course.

In 1996, Jürgen Behr completed his doctoral thesis, conducting research on the oxidant and antioxidant systems of the body and their influence on the course of chronic inflammatory lung diseases. At the same time, he continued to care for patients with cardiovascular diseases, and in 1999 he received an additional specialization in cardiology.

Since 1999, he has been authorized to teach at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich. Jürgen Behr worked at the Department of Internal Medicine as an assistant professor teaching therapeutics.

Since 2001, Behr was head of the pulmonology department and was senior physician of the intensive care unit and emergency room at the Munich University Hospital.

In 2008, Jürgen Beru was awarded for the best paper at the annual congress of the European Respiratory Society in Munich, and already in 2014 he was co-chair of this congress.

In 2010, Beru was offered the position of Director of the Bergmannsheil Clinic at the Ruhr University Bochum. He gladly accepted and also became the Head of the Department of Pulmonology at the same university. After three years in this position, Behr was elected Director of the Munich University Hospital and Head of the Department of Pulmonology in 2013. In addition to the European Lung Society, Jürgen Behr has been a frequent speaker at the congress on rare lung diseases, which contributed to his election as president of the 4th congress in 2016. Jürgen Behr is also a member of the Scientific Community for Pulmonary Diseases, the Federal Community of Physicians and Pulmonologists. In addition to European congresses and scientific societies, Jürgen Behr has shown himself to be a participant and later a member of the American Thoracic Society.
