EXPERIENCE OF MORE THAN 30 YEARS

Biography

A leading expert in the field of knee surgery.

I perform about 800 operations a year. One of my most well-known patients is Boris Becker, along with many other public figures.

Movement is life. My task is to restore it — safely, precisely, and with full respect for your goals.

My Career Timeline

1980s – Medical studies at LMU Munich.
1987–1989 – Fellowships in the United States (Vail and Los Angeles).
1988 – First arthroscopic ACL reconstructions in Germany.
1990 – Founded a private surgical centre in Munich; since then, more than 30,000 procedures performed.
1990–2009 – Team physician for professional football, tennis and ski teams.
2009 – Present – Practising at ECOM Munich, specialising in sports orthopaedics and minimally invasive knee surgery.

I specialise in treating sports injuries, knee surgery, and arthroscopic procedures aimed at restoring full joint function.
My focus includes:

  • reconstruction of cruciate ligaments (ACL / PCL);
  • meniscus repair and cartilage transplantation;
  • tendon and muscle injuries, including Achilles tears;
  • arthroscopy of the ankle and shoulder;
  • sports trauma and rehabilitation for active patients;
  • prevention of re-injury and long-term joint care.

For more than 25 years, I have worked as an orthopaedic surgeon dedicated to sports medicine and knee reconstruction.
I have performed over 30,000 surgical procedures and was among the first surgeons in Germany to carry out arthroscopic cruciate ligament reconstruction as early as 1988.
Throughout my career, I have served as a team doctor for professional football clubs, national tennis players, and alpine ski athletes.

Sport has always been part of my life, both personally and professionally. Working with athletes taught me that a successful recovery means more than healing a joint — it’s about helping a person regain confidence in their body.
My role is to combine precise surgical technique with a clear, structured rehabilitation plan, so every patient — whether a professional athlete or an active person — can return to what they love doing most.

I studied medicine at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU Munich).
I trained internationally in the United States, including at the Steadman Clinic (Vail, Colorado) and the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic (Los Angeles) — two of the world’s leading centres for sports orthopaedics.
Today, I hold specialist certification in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, and continue to lecture and train younger surgeons in minimally invasive techniques.

Over the years, I’ve been involved in research projects on sports injuries, cartilage restoration and arthroscopic innovations.
Here are a few topics of interest to patients:

  • “Arthroscopic Reconstruction of the Cruciate Ligament – Early Results” — my first series of ACL reconstructions performed in the late 1980s.
  • “Modern Cartilage Surgery and Return-to-Sport Outcomes” — how cartilage repair helps athletes regain full activity.
  • “Minimally Invasive Orthopaedics – Less Trauma, Faster Recovery” — exploring how smaller incisions lead to better results.

I’m honoured to be recognised among Munich’s leading orthopaedic knee specialists.
I’ve been listed in national rankings and serve as medical advisor to several professional sports organisations, including TSV 1860 Munich and the German Tennis Federation.
What I value most, however, are the thousands of patients who have returned to full mobility and active lives after treatment.
