A few words about the labor path
Professor Bernhard Meier was born on March 9, 1962 in the oldest university town in southwestern Bavaria, Germany.
Initially began studying medicine at the University of Padua, one of the oldest universities in Europe and Italy. The University of Padua is one of the historical centers of science. It was attended by such figures of the first magnitude as Copernicus, Galileo, Vesalius and other brilliant people.
Not surprisingly, Bernard Mayer had already defended his thesis at the age of 27. Scientific experience, the future professor, gained by traveling to different cities. So he conducted scientific research at the State University of New York, Brooklyn, and at the Northwestern University of Chicago. Bernard defended his dissertation in Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, at the Institute of Human Genetics.
Later he visited clinics in Tübingen, Duisberg and other cities as a neurosurgeon. He also completed internships in Zurich (Switzerland) and Arizona (USA).
In 1995 in Bonn, after writing numerous articles and managing a large number of patients as well as obtaining a certificate in neurosurgery, Bernhard Meier began working as a senior physician. Even then, he had already significantly improved diagnostics for the management of neurosurgical patients by participating in the development and application of new research methods.
After serving as a senior physician for 4 years, training more than one generation of residents and students, Bernard was promoted to full professor in 1994.
Bernhard Meier became head of the Clinic for Neurosurgery at the Rechts der Isar at the Technical University of Munich in 2006.
Turning point and basic skills
His appointment was justified by the availability of his vast clinical experience treatment in Germany, Dr. Mayer’s expertise and contributions to neurosurgery as a science are remarkable. In addition to his professional qualities, Dr. Mayer possesses the necessary qualities to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration. When Dr. Bernard was appointed, he was eager to provide the medical center with state-of-the-art equipment for performing surgical procedures of various levels of complexity and laboratories for the advancement of science.
Dr. Mayer believes that neurosurgery is a field of medicine where one cannot skimp on technology and instruments. Thanks to Bernhard Mayer, the Neurosurgery Clinic of the Rechts der Isar at the Technical University of Munich is a benchmark of excellence for the most complex surgical procedures, which were once considered fantastic. The main techniques are surgical navigation, microsurgery, which allows the detection and removal of very small tumors, as well as the detection of functional changes in the brain during surgery.
During his career, Dr. Mayer has performed more than one thousand surgical interventions, which have the highest category of complexity. Prof. Bernard Mayer’s professional interests lie in such areas of neurosurgery as vascular, spinal neurosurgery and oncology. Operations such as complex brain tumors and brain base tumors, both malignant and benign, deserve special attention.
Dr. Bernard deals with tumors that are located deep in the brain tissue, which are responsible for speech, memory, hearing, etc. These surgeries are dangerous with their complications and many surgeons do not undertake them because very often the clinic or hospital does not have the necessary equipment for such complex surgeries.
By providing the neurosurgery clinic of the Rechts der Isar at the Technical University of Munich with the necessary modern navigation technology, the professor has given a chance to those patients who have been denied help and almost deprived of a chance for a successful outcome.
Thanks to Dr. Meyer’s equipment and professionalism, such interventions are possible in 90% of cases. The patient can be discharged as soon as a couple of weeks after the operation.
In addition to oncology, the professor treats pathology of cerebral vessels (e.g. aneurysms). The challenge in this area is to make an informed decision about the surgical intervention, its scope and timing. As in this pathology, an unperformed operation in time can lead to death, and the time goes on for hours. Close cooperation with neuroradiologists is necessary in this area of neurosurgery.
In addition to brain surgery, Dr. Meyer treats spinal disorders. His fame and notoriety have long gone beyond the borders of Germany. Dr. Meier’s patient was Maria Komissarova, a freestyle athlete who suffered a spinal injury during her preparation for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Any neurosurgeon will tell you that to effectively treat a patient with a neurosurgical problem, only collaboration with different specialists will maximize the effect. A good erudition allows Bernard Meier to see the patient’s body as a whole, which is very rare, because usually each specialist sees only his own problem.
Dr. Meier participates in various conferences, seminars, gives presentations and promotes medical knowledge throughout Germany.
His wealth of experience and knowledge led to his selection as a member of the board of the German Academy of Neurosurgery and his appointment as chairman of the spine section of the European Association of the Society of Neurosurgeons.
Thus, Prof. Bernhard Meier is one of the best doctors in Germany who deals with spinal diseases, brain oncology as well as vascular diseases of the brain.
