Prevention and early detection. Papanicolaou smear (PAP test, oncocytology smear). The most important measure to reduce the risk of cervical cancer is regular screening. In the clinic, in addition to a gynecologist’s examination, a woman must examine the surface of the cervix with a kind of magnifying glass (colposcope), using a cotton ball or a small brush (tampon) to remove cells from the surface of the cervix. The cells are then examined under a microscope using a special Papanicolaou staining (PAP smear). If the result is not within the norm (PAP I and II), such a smear is considered pathologic, but additional studies are required. There may be inflammatory changes (PAP IIw), which should be rechecked 3-4 months after appropriate topical treatment. If there are superficial tissue changes, this is called dysplasia (Group III D). Even more serious changes are severe dysplasia (group IVa) and cancer (group V). You are also tested for human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause these changes. There are two vaccines to reduce the incidence of these changes that can lead to cervical cancer. Both vaccines are available at the clinic.

Gynecologic ultrasound

The clinic performs various types of pelvic ultrasound examinations. Indications for this study are diseases of the internal genital organs (uterus, ovary, fallopian tubes), which may manifest as abdominal pain, menstrual irregularities, changes in weight or waist circumference. Usually an ultrasound is performed when an examination and palpation alone are not sufficient. In the clinic, investigations can be performed to monitor health without any complaints or symptoms. In particular, fibromas, i.e. benign uterine muscular nodules, are easily recognized by ultrasound and an individual decision is made as to the need for therapy. First of all, the following questions can be clarified with ultrasound:

  • whether treatment is necessary
  • how effective the treatment is
  • whether minimally invasive treatment is possible
  • performing laparoscopic node removal
  • performing other procedures (embolization).
