Scientific activity

Since 1998, the German Research Society (DFG) has continuously promoted research projects. Support for research projects has also been received from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in the USA, the National Institutes of Health in the USA, the European Union as well as other foundations.

Main directions of research activities

Immunology and immunotherapy of type I diabetes, diabetes genetics, gestational diabetes, diabetes prevention, and pancreatic insular cell transplantation.

Publications

More than 80 original articles published mostly in specialized English-language research publications. More than 50 review articles, scientific reviews, as well as scientific articles in books.

Description of the Institute’s activities

The Institute for Diabetes Research Munich at the Klinikum München-Schwabing operates under the auspices of the Diabetes Research Group as a registered association. The institute was founded in 1968 on the initiative of Professors Helmut Meinert and Otto Wieland with the support of the German Research Society. The activities of the institute have been dedicated to the field of diabetology since its inception on the two upper floors of the Institute of Clinical Chemistry at the Klinikum. Initially, the cooperation of specialists from the biochemical, clinical-chemical and natural science fields in the framework of clinical and clinical-experimental research played a key role.

Otto Wieland and Helmut Meinert, who held concurrent management positions at the Munich-Schwabing Clinic, led diabetes research for many years before handing over leadership to young specialists in 1983 and 1993. During this time, more than a hundred staff members were involved in diabetes research. To date, the title of habilitated doctor has been conferred on 25 research staff members who have become distinguished. Predominantly these staff members have been involved in the training of many international visitors as well as more than 230 doctoral students at the Diabetes Research Institute. More than 1,000 original research papers and reviews have been published. The awards received by the staff members are only clearly and incompletely indicated below: the Paul-Langerhans Medal, the Paul-Langerhans Medal, the Paul-Langerhans Medal, the Paul-Langerhans Medal, the Paul-Langerhans Medal, the Paul-Langerhans Medal and the Paul-Langerhans Medal. Enrst-von-Bergmann Medal of the German Society of Physicians, German Society of Laboratory Medicine Award, Minkowski Award, Camillo-Golgi Instructor’s Guidance, and the German Society of Diabetologists. Nineteen years after its foundation, with the assistance of the German Research Society, the formal task of defining a new organizational form was set for formal reasons, which eventually led to the current structure of the institute. The basic structure, laboratories, administration and so on have been stably funded by the State of Bavaria. The institute employs about 50 staff members and has an investment volume of more than 2 million euros, most of which is financed by sponsors.

Objectives

The work of the research groups within the Institute of Diabetes Research focuses on the occurrence and prevention of diabetes. The main objective is to develop new approaches to diagnosis and treatment. Rare variants of diabetes are also brought to the forefront. With regard to complications, special attention is paid, among other things, to the targeted investigation of blood vessel diseases. The results obtained depend decisively on the close relationship between theoretical and clinical disciplines. In addition, the aim was also to pave the way for the fruitful work of the employees within the working groups and to support their scientific activities. Their projects are constantly subjected to the expertise of foreign experts (e.g. as part of further funding from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) in order to obtain the necessary research funds. This evaluation of the projects’ achievements is an indispensable link in the success of the scientific work.
