The history of the clinic

Karl Theodor was the 2 years younger brother of Elisabeth of Bavaria, Empress of Austria, also known as Sissi. Their father was Duke Maximilian Joseph (1808-1888) and their mother was the Bavarian royal daughter Ludovig (1808-1892). At the age of 14 he joined the Bavarian army and then participated in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) as a senior officer. The war interrupted his studies at the University of Munich, where he studied philosophy, law, economics, and finally medicine. Among his most famous teachers was the chemist Justus von Liebig. Nevertheless, he graduated from the university in 1880 and became a doctor of medicine. The young man with blue blood becomes a very famous ophthalmologist who begins his career at almost 30 years of age.

His reason for becoming a doctor was very personal. In 1865 he married his cousin Sophia of Saxony (1845-1867), who developed respiratory complications after the birth of her first child and was very distraught. A year later she contracted influenza and died at just 21 years of age. The death of the woman he loved affects Carl Theodore deeply. Powerless before her death, he decides to study medicine despite the disagreements in his family.
