SMAS-lifting — the latest treatment technology in Germany, which aims to restore the tone of the muscular-aponeurotic layer of the face.

The word «smas» means «superficial muscular-aponeurotic system», which defines the contours of the facial oval. This system is quite strong at a young age. After 30-35 years of age, the fibers of the smas are stretched, which leads to the following age-related changes:

  • Sagging of the facial oval.
  • Deepening of nasolabial folds.
  • Deepening of nasolacrimal furrows.
  • Sagging chin skin («turkey neck»).

SMAS-LIFTING

Surgical SMAS elevator treatment in Germany is performed on patients between the ages of 30-45 and 65, and is performed under general anesthesia.

The following types of operation are distinguished:

  • Classic SMAS-lifting.
  • Endoscopic SMAS-lifting.
  • Ultrasonic SMAS-lifting.

CLASSIC SMAS ELEVATOR

The surgery consists of fixing SMAS in new points, as well as removing excess skin and subcutaneous fat. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and lasts about three hours, requires the patient to stay under the supervision of a doctor for at least 2-3 days.

Rehabilitation lasts about 2-3 weeks. The surgical incisions are sutured without tension, which allows for a natural result.

The sutures are removed on the seventh day after surgery.

ENDOSCOPIC SMAS-LIFT

The procedure is performed with an endoscope through small incisions. Endoscopic SMAS-lifting is indicated at the initial age changes, i.e. at the age of 30-45 years, and allows you to work on specific areas of the face (forehead, middle third, lower third or neck).

This procedure is not performed on patients with significant excess skin.

The duration of the operation is about one and a half hours. The hospital stay after the operation is about two days.

ULTRASONIC SMAS-LIFT

On the modern market of aesthetic services there is an alternative to surgical lifting of the musculo-aponeurotic system — lifting with the help of ultrasound waves. The procedure is performed without incisions and rehabilitation period, but the result of the procedure is not comparable to surgical intervention.

It is performed only in patients with initial signs of aging.

BENEFITS OF SMAS LIFTING

  • High efficiency of the method allows to work effectively in the age group up to 70 years.
  • Possibility to eliminate or correct deep skin folds.
  • Removal of sagging skin.
  • Preservation of the natural lines of the mouth and eyes, due to the lack of tension of the skin.
  • Return of the natural contour and volume of the face with the preservation of its individuality.
  • Ability to affect all areas of the face.
  • Invisible postoperative stitches.

PREOPERATIVE EXAMINATION

To identify contraindications to SMAS-lifting, as well as the prevention of postoperative complications, you need to undergo the following examinations:

CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • Pregnancy.
  • Breastfeeding.
  • Diabetes mellitus.
  • Uncontrolled arterial hypertension.
  • Endocrine diseases.
  • Diseases of internal organs in the acute stage.
  • Diseases of the cardiovascular system.
  • Taking anticoagulants.
  • Blood coagulation disorders.
  • Oncology.
  • Acute infectious diseases.
  • Mental illness.

SURGICAL PREPARATION

At your pre-surgery consultation, your plastic surgeon will gather detailed information about your medical condition and make individualized recommendations, which may include the following items:

  • Eliminate smoking at least 6 weeks before surgery.
  • Increase hydration before and after surgery.
  • Avoid taking  aspirin  and some anti-inflammatory drugs.

POSTOPERATIVE RECOMMENDATIONS

It is possible to return to your usual way of life three weeks after surgery. During the recovery period it is necessary to follow the recommendations of the attending physician — this will minimize the risk of complications.

  • Exclude traumatization of wounds.
  • Wearing a special fixation bandage for 3-5 days after surgery.
  • For six weeks exclude physical exercise, visits to baths and saunas.
  • Exclude exposure to direct sunlight for 3-4 weeks.

CONCLUSIONS

  • Severe and persistent swelling and hematomas.
  • Infection.
  • Bleeding.
  • Motor and sensory disturbances due to damage to nerve trunks.
  • Negative effects of anesthesia.
  • Local necrosis of the skin.
  • Deformation of the face.

Almost all complications can be minimized by taking into account contraindications and strict compliance by the patient with all doctor’s appointments.

COST

The cost of SMAS-lift in Germany is about 10,000 Euros and depends on the qualifications of the surgeon, as well as the complexity of the operation.
