Bypass surgery

Bypass surgery is the creation of an additional blood supply pathway that bypasses a deformed section of a blood vessel, resulting in blood flow in the vessels being restored.

The inner wall of an artery should normally have a smooth surface, but during the course of life it may develop atherosclerosis (plaques). These atherosclerotic plaques cause narrowing of the lumen of the blood vessel, and blood supply to tissues or organs is impaired. To restore blood supply, surgical bypasses are created, through which blood bypasses the narrowed section of the vessel. Such formations are called shunts.

Aortocoronary bypass surgery is an effective treatment for atherosclerosis of the coronary vessels of the heart that supply the heart muscle, i.e. coronary artery disease. But bypass surgery can also be performed to restore blood flow in virtually any peripheral arteries, such as the legs.

The German Heart Center has been performing heart surgeries for more than 40 years, and the clinic itself is a leader among European cardiac centers. Several bypasses are performed daily by only one specialist physician, which allows for high surgical results and minimizes possible complications.
