Biography

He began his medical career at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich in 1980. After 6 years of study, Dr. Kelner passed the state examination. In addition, Dr. Kelner analyzed a large amount of clinical material during his studies and defended his dissertation at the end of his studies.

Since 1986, Dr. Herbert Kelner has worked as an assistant assistant at the Innenstadt Clinic of the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. And from 1990 he was recruited to the Clinic of Radiology as an assistant. In 1991, Dr. Kelner received a fellowship from the German Research Foundation at the University of California, Los Angeles. For several years he served as Acting Head of the Department of Rheumatology. And already in 1994, he was appointed head of the Department of Rheumatology at the Klinikum Innerstadt. In 1997, Dr. Kelner defended his thesis in the field of internal medicine and rheumatology. His extensive clinical and administrative experience made it possible for him to become Chief Physician of the Innerstadt Clinic in 1998.

From 2001 to 2003, Dr. Kelner served as a visiting professor at Rochester University, USA. In addition, since 2003, Dr. Herbert Kelner has been a professor at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. In 2004, Dr. Kelner entered private practice in gastroenterology and rheumatology, after which he was appointed head of the department of gastroenterology and rheumatology at the Neuwittelsbach Clinic.

Two years later, having gained enough experience, Dr. Kelner founded his own specialized clinic dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, as well as a wide range of rheumatological diseases.

His work is highly valued among the German Rheumatology Society, as shown by the awarding of the Bruno-Schiller and Rudolf-Schön Prize. From 2007 to 2012, Prof. Kelner was the spokesperson of the German Rheumatology Society. As of 2018, the doctor has been ranked among the top rheumatologists in Germany (Top-Medic 2018).

His more than 30 years of experience helps him to deal with extremely complex clinical situations. His extensive medical knowledge during his training and activities at the Klinikum Innenstadt of the University of Munich (1986-2004) allows for the differential diagnosis of various symptom complexes related to gastrointestinal and joint diseases. Research projects have taken Dr. Kelner to the USA (Research Fellow, Division of Rheumatology, University of California, 1991-1993), Rochester (Visiting Professor, University of Rochester, 2001) and Finland (DAAD collaboration with the University of Turku, 1994-1997).

Dr. Kelner’s main principle of work is an individual approach, honest and open dialogue with the patient. The doctor pays special attention to the care of chronically ill patients.
