The Asklepios Specialty Clinic in Munich is a center for the treatment of diseases of the human respiratory or pulmonary system. This center is the largest for the treatment of all lung and bronchial problems.

The chief physician of the hospital is Professor Dr. Jürgen Behr, who studied medicine in 1979-1985 at the University of Munich, since 2013 he has been the director of the hospital, in addition to his specialty of pulmonology, he has specialty in allergology and cardiology. The clinic has more than 10 departments, each of which has its own director. When treating any patient, the doctors of these departments cooperate with each other, holding consiliums and making decisions regarding the treatment.

The clinic includes the following departments:

Department of Anesthesiology. The head of the department is Frank Schönhuber. The staff of the department provides anesthesia care when necessary for each patient. Surgical interventions on the bronchi and lungs require more complex anesthesia than other operations, so anesthesiologists must have the appropriate skills. Doctors in the department perform intubations under the control of a bronchoscope due to the complexity of conventional anesthesia. Also, this patient population often requires high-frequency ventilation to ensure lung function while bronchial and pulmonary surgery is performed. In addition to the above techniques, the department staff performs general anesthesia using intravenous total anesthesia, and epidural anesthesia. When performing epidural anesthesia, the difficulty in patients with lung diseases is a higher injection site for anesthesia, which requires a certain skill, because when performing this anesthesia the possibility of affecting the heart is higher compared to classical epidural anesthesia.

Department of Intensive Care, Sleep and Respiratory Medicine. The head of the department is Lorenz Nowak. Under Dr. Nowak’s leadership, there is a team of physicians who practice respiratory medicine in addition to intensive care. The staff helps patients who have been receiving long-term respiratory support to begin breathing on their own. When a machine breathes for the patient, which is very common among patients with lung and bronchial diseases, the respiratory muscles stop working properly, the patient makes no attempts to breathe, so doctors teach these patients to breathe again. Patients with chronic lung diseases often require treatment and care at home, the doctors of this department also work at the patients’ homes, helping to select the right modes of ventilation, as well as to provide the necessary care for the patient.

Also, this department treats patients with neuromuscular diseases, when there is a gradual decline in their own lung function. Such patients require non-invasive lung ventilation, i.e. with the help of a special mask and artificial ventilation apparatus.

Additionally

Doctors take on complex cases of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that require constant monitoring of lung function and adjustment of ventilation parameters.

In addition to patients with direct bronchial and lung damage, the doctors of this department deal with patients with obesity and, as a consequence, hypoventilation. Special face masks and non-invasive ventilation are also used to address this problem in parallel with weight loss techniques.

Patients with kyphoscolysis, likewise, sometimes need ventilation, or even surgical intervention to correct the curvature of the spine and allow the lungs to breathe more easily.

Department of Oncology. The head of the department is Niels Reinmuth. The department deals with all types of lung and bronchial cancer, as well as pleural cancer. The staff of the department adheres only to modern methods of treatment. Ongoing multicenter research on the development of lung cancer treatment methods is carried out.

The main department of the clinic is the Department of Pulmonology. The head of the department is the chief physician of the clinic — Jürgen Behr. This department treats patients with any lung pathology: interstitial lung diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, tuberculosis and others.

The Department of Radiology, headed by Dr. Bernard King, is an essential department for the diagnosis of lung and bronchial diseases. The department is equipped with the highest quality technology to diagnose any lung disease. The department has at its disposal a CT scanner for computerized and magnetic resonance examinations. Thanks to this department, it is possible to carry out vascular examinations with the use of contrast.

Department of Thoracic Surgery. The head of the department is Rudolf A. Hatz FACS. The department is staffed by highly qualified surgeons who perform thoracic surgery. The work of the department is aimed at minimizing the volume of operations, with the maximum possible preservation of healthy tissues. The department is improving the method of performing operations with the use of HITHOC apparatus, i.e. surgeons perform tumor removal with subsequent heating of the remaining tumor tissues.

Also, the clinic has departments for the treatment of infectious lung diseases, obstructive diseases.

The Elderly Care Unit, under the direction of Dr. Adrian Grund, helps people with lung diseases to fight for recovery, as old age complicates the course of any disease and requires special care. The department also provides psychological support for these patients. In addition to treatment of the main lung disease, such patients have other health problems: apathy, depression, swallowing and speech disorders, treatment of chronic pain, etc.

The clinic has its own in-house morphology laboratory, with staff dedicated to characterizing smears and specimens and diagnosing complex cases of lung disease.

In addition to open lung and bronchial surgeries, the hospital performs endoscopic surgical interventions using various endoscopic techniques. Bronchoscopy methods can be used both for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

Dr. Frank Reichenberger is the head of the diagnostic department where lung function tests are performed. The department has all the necessary equipment for a complete lung function study.

The clinic has an in-house sleep lab that diagnoses sleep disorders that may be the cause of sleep apnea and lead to breathing problems.

Full treatment would not be the same without the necessary high quality patient care. Sabine Boulfoul is the head nurse in charge of the nursing staff that provides professional nursing care. Under her supervision is the entire nursing staff, including the orderlies. Thanks to her work and the work of her team, every patient receives the medical care they need, which contributes to a faster recovery.
