Gynecology (Greek: gynä, Gen. gynaikos = woman, logos = teaching) is the study of the treatment of the female reproductive organs. In contrast to obstetrics, gynecology studies the diseases of the non-pregnant woman.

About the clinic

Research methods and treatment

In gynecology, external and internal genital examinations (using a mirror), palpatory diagnosis and ultrasound of internal organs (uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, Douglass space, kidneys) are performed. At the next gynecological examination, which should be carried out once a year, a smear is also taken from the cervix, to detect the smallest changes at an early stage. According to the results of the smear analysis, an additional study under regular medical supervision is recommended (at a specially designated time for the study of dysplasia). If necessary, a biopsy may be required.

The tasks of gynecology also include preventive examinations (examination, palpation and ultrasound) of the female breasts and axillary diagnostics. For breast examinations, it is necessary to undergo the necessary additional procedures (mammography, magnetic resonance tomography) in the Department of X-ray Radiologic Diagnostics.

Treatment of benign and malignant gynecologic diseases, depending on the disease picture, can be surgical or conservative (using medications).

Gynecology refers to the surgical field of medicine. Conclusions of benign or malignant conditions such as breast tumor, cervical changes, ovarian tumor (including cysts), cervical tumor (e.g. uterine myoma, cancers), infections, uterine prolapse, childlessness and so on are subject to surgical intervention. The range of surgical interventions increases from microsurgery to major abdominal and breast surgeries, including plastic and reconstructive procedures.

Many gynecologic cancers require chemotherapy before or after surgery. Chemotherapy means treatment for cancer with certain medicines. Chemotherapy uses substances that damage the cells that cause the disease, either killing them or inhibiting their further development.

The Mammology Center of the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich.

As a university-based mammology center, we advocate for advances in diagnosis, treatment and research in all stages of breast cancer.

We aim to create a trusting, humane and reliable relationship with our patients through professional collaboration with experts in various fields.

The goal of our mammology center is to provide optimal comprehensive care for patients with benign and malignant breast diseases in both primary and advanced stages of the disease.

Breast cancer is one of the most common malignant female diseases. A reliable diagnosis, followed by high-quality comprehensive therapy, can influence the further course of the disease.

Our mammology and oncology centers (Interdisciplinary Cancer Center of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich) focus on modern scientific medicine to provide outpatient and inpatient care and organize interactions with leading physicians and partners.

The professionalism of qualified staff, the use of state-of-the-art equipment and comprehensive medical care form the basis of quality treatment for our patients. This basis contributes to confidence and speedy recovery. The mammology center offers a wide range of treatment measures, including, in particular, psycho-oncological care.

We engage the necessary specialties to improve the individual treatment program for each patient and contribute to the advancement of medicine through our scientific work.

Cancer Center of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich

The treatment of gynecological oncological diseases involves diagnosis and treatment options in accordance with the most modern standards, structured cooperation with various scientific specialties. Building a trusting relationship with affected patients is our primary goal.

This is a basic requirement in our work. In this way, we can offer patients optimal support from diagnosis, surgery, systematic treatment to postoperative care at any stage of cancer.

When planning treatment, experts provide opinions from various specialties, such as gynecology, radiology, pathology and radiotherapy, in order to design the most appropriate individualized treatment program for each patient

Minimally invasive surgery in gynecology has replaced open surgery in many areas. Also in recent years, technology has improved so much in gynecologic oncology that operations to eliminate uterine and cervical cancer can be performed using laparoscopy or a computer (DaVinciSystem). In addition, the sentinel lymph node technique reduces the side effects of surgery. The daVinci® Surgical System opens up new possibilities for computer-assisted and robotic surgical treatment. By improving the working environment for surgeons, the daVinci Surgical System enables minimally invasive approaches with greater throughput, even for cancer.

During their stay in our clinic, we offer our patients an extensive range of additional services (physical therapy, psycho-oncology and social services) for physical and spiritual healing from their illnesses.

Endometriosis Center at the University Hospital of Munich.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is the development of tissue similar to endometrium (Greek: Endometrium) outside the uterus. Between 10 and 15% of all women of childbearing age suffer from this disease. To date, the causes of endometriosis have not been clarified, so there are no causal treatments that can be used to eliminate the disease.

A focus of endometriosis usually occurs in the pelvic region, where it occurs in various shapes and sizes. Depending on its localization, an endometriosis focus can lead to a painful inflammatory response, scarring, bleeding from the bowel and bladder, and infertility.

However, the symptoms of the disease vary. For example, some women with extensive endometriosis may have no complaints, while others with minor spread of the disease suffer from severe pain. These pains occur mainly during menstruation and sexual intercourse.

Confirmation of the diagnosis of «endometriosis» is made by histologic examination, which requires abdominoscopy (laparoscopy).

Treatment of endometriosis depends on the nature of the complaint, the age of the patient and the size of the focus.

Treatment is carried out, starting with the dose of hormones up to the removal of the endometriosis focus by laparoscopy. If there is a strong desire to become pregnant, assisted reproductive technology is used.
