Coxarthrosis treatment in Germany

Coxarthrosis of the hip joint is the main cause of disability in the elderly population. Treatment of coxarthrosis is a long-term process, and in German clinics it is aimed at preventing further development of the pathological process.

Causes of pathology

The etiology of coxarthrosis is still unclear. However, there are a large number of risk factors that can be triggers in the development of the disease.

  • increased load on the limb: athletes, obese patients
  • tissue trophic disorder: improper nutrition
  • post-traumatic changes
  • congenital or acquired diseases of the spine
  • flat feet
  • hormonal changes
  • metabolic changes and related diseases
  • infections and inflammation
  • age
  • heredity

There are two variants of coxarthrosis:

  1. primary pathology — the cause is unclear, knee joints and spine are often affected
  2. secondary variant — develops as a result of other diseases or injuries.

Diagnostic measures

A patient first comes to a traumatologist with complaints of pain in the joint when walking. At the same time, there may be no pain outside of physical activity. Various pain and stiffness scales have been developed to assess the severity of the process. In addition, there are methods for assessing the severity of lower extremity impairment in coxarthrosis, which should be evaluated for the development of rehabilitation measures and the amount of exercise.

In addition to pain and stiffness when moving or at rest, the volume of movement decreases at later stages. After questioning, the specialist will conduct an examination, which will reveal painful points, dense thickenings in the area of the joint gap. There may be signs of inflammation.

After determining the localization of the pathological process, the specialist will refer the patient for radiological examination. There are certain radiological signs of osteoarthritis. X-ray images, depending on the stage of the process, will show the following changes:

  • reduction in the distance between the articular surfaces or narrowing of the articular gap, which characterizes dystrophic changes
  • changes in joint surfaces or deformities
  • axis curvature
  • bone overgrowths, osteophytes, osteosclerosis

In addition to X-rays, ultrasound can provide information about the condition of the musculoskeletal system. In German clinics, many specialists have knowledge and experience in diagnosing disorders using ultrasound.

In addition, magnetic resonance imaging is performed for differential diagnosis.

A general and biochemical blood test is also performed on the patient to rule out rheumatic diseases.

Correction of pathology

Each stage of therapy is aimed at:

  • reducing the load on the affected side,
  • repairing damaged cells,
  • slowing the damage to healthy tissue,
  • prevent contractures,
  • increase in range of motion.

With the help of physical therapy, a physical activity adequate to the condition is selected. In addition to physical therapy, German clinics use a variety of physiotherapeutic procedures:

  • radiation therapy
  • magnetic methods
  • ultrasound treatment
  • electrophoresis
  • different types of massage (e.g. vibration massage)

In addition to physiotherapy and physical therapy, conservative regimens are applied, anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs are used. Clinics in Germany are conducting clinical trials to develop new drugs. Recently, stem cells and autologous plasma have been used in the treatment of coxarthrosis; this method gives stable positive results.

In severe coxarthrosis, surgical correction methods are used. In Germany, endoprosthetics are performed. At the same time, the experience of specialists allows to perform endoprosthetics of both joints at once, or to perform arthroplasty, i.e. prosthetics of not the whole joint, but only cartilage replacement.

Cost of treatment and choice of clinic

Prices for disease management vary depending on the severity of the disease, the amount and regimen of therapy, the need for surgery, and other factors. Prices for treatment are listed below:

diagnosis — from 360 Euros

Coxarthrosis therapy with endoprosthesis — from 4100 Euros

hip replacement and rehabilitation — from 7800 Euros

Diagnostics and conservative treatment — from 1300 Euros

correction with stem cells — from 12000

arthroscopic surgery — from 2300 Euros

application of autologous plasma — from 2600

rehabilitation — from 250 EuroCost of treatment and choice of clinic
