Cryopreservation of sperm, embryos, eggs

Cryopreservation in Germany

Freeze and store the cells for an extended period of time in liquid nitrogen at minus 196°C.

The specialized German reproductive medicine treatment clinic «Nextclinic» of Prof. Zech , applies cryopreservation of embryos at different stages of development. The concept is to freeze the eggs without the formation of ice crystals. The egg changes from a liquid to a glassy state very quickly, thus preserving its viability and functionality after defrosting for future use in IVF and childbirth.

Sperm cryopreservation in Germany

The sperm are placed in small tubes — cryovials, which are sent to special cryopreservatories filled with liquid nitrogen.

Frozen spermatozoa can be stored for tens of years and retain their fertilizing capacity. When necessary, sperm are thawed, then activated and used to fertilize an egg using various assisted reproductive technologies. Sperm freezing is used for a donor program to help the couple in the treatment of infertility, and is also recommended for men with malignant neoplasms, the treatment of which is associated with radiation or chemotherapy.

Embryo cryopreservation in Germany

Unlike sperm, embryos are very vulnerable to freezing and thawing procedures. Usually, about 10-20% of them do not survive freezing and subsequent thawing. Therefore, cryopreservation is only applied to good quality embryos.

This method is also used for severe forms of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, when a possible pregnancy will exacerbate the critical condition of the woman.

There are two main methods of freezing: slow and fast.

Cryopreservation of the so-called «slow method» is carried out using a computer-controlled freezer at an average rate of 1 °C / 3 min,

Egg freezing is a method of ultra-fast freezing that leads to the formation of a glassy state in living cells, which avoids the formation of ice crystals. The main advantages of vitrification are the elimination of mechanical damage, which, when ice crystals are formed as a result of prolonged exposure to constantly decreasing temperatures, cause intracellular damage.

Important! Because of its specificity, this method requires high quality technological equipment, good skills and a lot of experience of the doctor.

Indications for egg freezing in Germany

  • Used in women with malignant tumor
  • In early menopause, there’s a family history
  • When it is necessary to postpone motherhood for social reasons
