How can you get rid of couperose?

A flushed face can have a variety of causes: excitement, fear, embarrassment, exertion during physical activity or extreme temperature changes. However, facial redness for these reasons occurs only as a temporary phenomenon and disappears after a short time.

But for some people, facial redness is a constant daily problem that does not disappear by itself. The cause of this phenomenon is the dilation and fragility of blood vessels, which arise as a result of disorders in the connective tissue of the vascular wall. In this case, we talk about couperosis in cosmetic medicine, and in dermatology about telangiectasia. In other, more understandable words for patients, such manifestations on the skin are called vascular mesh or vascular stars.

The spread of couperose

Statistics show that first of all women over 30 suffer from couperosis, especially women with light skin and hair type, and very often it is with red hair.

What is couperosis?

Couperosis can be a precursor to rosacea, an inflammatory and serious skin condition characterized by itching, scaly redness and pustules. The two terms are sometimes used synonymously, which is medically incorrect. Generally, couperosis is not a disease, but rather a cosmetic problem, but it is very uncomfortable for most patients, and in some cases, can even have a negative impact on mental well-being.

In the early stages of couperosis, redness of the nose and cheeks is temporary. However, with more frequent occurrence of dilated vessels, blood accumulates in the capillaries and the redness persists. In addition, these congestive events not only lead to permanent vasodilation, they can even lead to the new formation of veins that are less elastic but. at the same time, more permeable. As a result, blood penetrates into the surrounding tissues and thus increases redness.

If the affected vessels are arteries, the vascular meshes have a light red color. With venectasia (dilated veins), a bluish color appears on the face. Mixed forms are also possible.

What are the causes of couperosis?

In most people, redness is due to genetic predisposition. Less common can be: long exposure to the sun, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, coffee and black tea.

As a first and simplest measure against couperosis, people prone to it should avoid saunas and steam baths, prolonged sunbathing and, if possible, avoid strong temperature fluctuations. In addition, it is advisable to avoid alcohol, black tea, coffee and spicy food. Smoking also has a negative effect, as nicotine narrows the blood vessels.

Measures for short-term relief of couperosis

In addition to the measures described above, there are other ways in which you can counteract couperosis in the short term, especially in facial skin care. Special attention should be paid to the ingredients of the products used. Perfumes usually contain essential oils that help increase blood circulation in the thin capillaries on your face. Therefore, you should do without such skin care products. In addition, the products should not contain alcohol, mineral or silicone oils. Also, fat creams are unfavorable for skin prone to couperosis, as they form an insulating layer on the skin and heat the tissues underneath. As a result, dilated capillaries show up even more clearly. On the other hand, it is recommended that the skin be sufficiently moisturized. This strengthens the connective tissue and can prevent couperosis from spreading further.

To hide the appearance of couperose, many sufferers use special cosmetics that neutralize the color of the altered skin. Then they apply ordinary makeup and powder. However, this measure does not have any therapeutic effect. Peeling and massage will not help in the presence of vascular mesh.

What treatment is effective for couperosis?

Laser treatment is now considered a proven and effective method of dealing with couperosis.

Laser treatment of couperose step by step

Before the first session, a detailed consultation will be carried out by the attending physician. After a thorough diagnosis, the course of treatment is discussed with the patient. If possible, the treatment should be carried out during the cold season for best results, as the vessels are much more dilated during the warm summer months.

Depending on the severity of the couperose, the treatment is carried out in several sessions. A session usually lasts from 10 to a maximum of 20 minutes. This is followed by a rest period of about 15 minutes to allow the skin to cool down and calm down. Between appointments, the patient will care for the treated areas of skin with special products that are individually recommended by the couperosis specialist.

The use of the laser is largely painless, so treatment can be performed without local anesthesia. Controlled laser light pulses are absorbed by the red blood pigment in dilated capillaries. As a result, the walls of the blood vessels stick together and they die.

Experienced and specially trained cosmetologists will work with you for your follow-up facial care. They develop a plan tailored to the patient’s individual characteristics, so that he or she can enjoy beautiful skin without the unpleasant redness — couperosis — for as long as possible.

Important condition! In order to achieve the best possible result, it is necessary to refuse to stay in direct sunlight, alcohol, nicotine and other factors described above.

Benefits, risks and side effects of laser therapy for couperosis

As mentioned earlier, laser therapy for couperose is usually painless, especially when performed by a knowledgeable and experienced dermatologist (Very important!).

However, depending on the sensitivity and nature of the skin, as well as the light energy of the laser used, there may be a slight pain that patients often refer to as a «prick». Immediately after the session, the skin becomes red and in some cases even slightly swollen. These side effects subside after a short time. The redness that occurs after treatment can be masked immediately, as the laser does not leave an open wound on the skin.

One of the advantages of laser therapy is the gentle procedure in a few sessions, another is that no scars are left behind. If the patient consistently fulfills all preventive and maintenance measures after the last treatment, the duration of the effect of laser therapy can be determined to be approximately three weeks. If after some time the symptoms of couperose reappear, a second laser treatment can be performed.
