Cardioverter-defibrillators

Cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are machines that monitor the heart’s rhythm and correct it when it becomes irregular by sending electrical impulses.

At the academic cardiac center of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich  Munich is home to top-class cardiologists. They treat life-threatening arrhythmias using non-ablative methods by implanting cardioverters-defibrillators.

Various types of arrhythmias can lead to sudden cardiac death. Installing a cardioverter-defibrillator is a method that can save a person’s life in the shortest possible time.

Usually, patients with these types of arrhythmias are already taking various antiarrhythmic drugs; however, drug treatment can only reduce the number of arrhythmias.

The device will be able to control an episode of life-threatening arrhythmia that has already occurred. Implantation of such devices is also performed in patients for primary prevention. This is the group of patients who have not had an episode of life-threatening arrhythmia but have a large number of risk factors for its development.

Such factors include: suffered myocardial infarction, cardiac conduction disorders and other diseases.

Cardioverter-defibrillators start when ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia is diagnosed.

Thanks to advances in engineering, modern devices have been created that last longer and produce better diagnostics. In addition, the devices can now be implanted in patients with complex cardiac pathologies and comorbidities.

Cardioverter-defibrillator surgery usually lasts from 1.5 to 2 hours. General anesthesia is used for this operation, but sometimes an injection of a drug to relieve tension and make you feel slightly drowsy is sufficient.

To implant the device, a small incision is made in the subclavian area, after which a vein is punctured and the wire from the cardioverter-defibrillator is inserted. Given that the entire procedure is performed under X-ray control in the operating room, the wire is brought to the necessary place in the heart and fixed.

The next stage of the operation is the installation of the device itself — the pulse generator. Usually, a small bed is formed in the chest or abdomen area and the device is placed. Next, the doctor checks the operation of the device, and only then the final stitches are applied.

After the operation, it is necessary to be observed for several days to make sure that the device is working properly. The device must be replaced when the current source is exhausted. The replacement procedure usually takes half the time.

After the cardioverter-defibrillator is inserted, each patient receives an individual card with complete information about the device. This card must be carried with you at all times. After implantation of the device, regular medical visits are required.

In addition, the cardiologist will make recommendations that must be followed. When performing various examinations, such as CT and MRI scans, it is necessary to inform the doctors about the device installed so that no malfunctions occur during the procedures.
